They had been working for 68 straight hours when Major Carter finally declared they could do no more until they actually arrived at the border with Replicator space. SG-1 promptly retired to the individual quarters the Asgard had provided; meager even by military standards, the rooms were at least clean and dry and had horizontal surfaces. The team had slept in far worse places with far more malevolent hosts. The Asgard were trying.
Several hours later Thor entered Heimdall’s laboratory to find him pouring over four different screens of streaming alpha-numeric data.
“Heimdall. We have discussed this at great length. You are not to be spying on SG-1,” Thor stated with a hint of exasperation, if the Asgard even felt such an emotion.
“I have deactivated the video and the auto-log, Thor. They are asleep and have not been disturbed,” Heimdall explained.
“Are you not monitoring SG-1’s subconsciouses? Humans react very negatively to any type of covert screening without their permission. What is so important you put our alliance at risk?”
“I am only trying to understand them so that we can learn how they think. Maybe their sleep is more critical to their waking thought process than they even realize.” Heimdall brought up a series of narrative like data blocks. “I expected that their minds would continue to attempt to find solutions to the Replicator problem, but that has not been the case. Are you certain SG-1 is a four being unit? I believe they are without their fifth member.”
“O’Neill has stated that four individuals make up an unit. What leads you to this alternate conclusion?” Thor asked, beginning to scan the readouts.
“A common occurrence in all subconscious thought patterns: Doctor Janet Fraiser,” Heimdall began. “See here, and here, and here.” He pointed to specific places in the three male readouts.
“Interesting,” Thor commented and continued reading.
The first screen held the thought data from Colonel O’Neill. Thor quickly skipped over an anatomical impossibility O’Neill wished to see inflicted on Kinsey, his still lingering resentment towards the Tollan and a fleeting desire to go fishing. The Asgard lingered over the constant guilt O’Neill felt due to the untimely death of one called Charlie, not understanding until a later thought identified Charlie as his son. A random jumble concerning Major Carter and…
"Why is eye color of importance to a human male?" Heimdall questioned, disturbing his Supreme Commander’s concentration.
Thor was amazed at the utter respect O’Neill held for the Doctor. His words were often less than flattering and concentrated on her physical stature. But his mind in its unguarded state seemed to elevate her to almost mythic proportions. Her calming presences and the ability to patch both him and his teams back together earned her his gratitude and awe, even if he didn’t know how to express his admiration to her face. Thor couldn’t help but wonder why in his mind she was six feet tall, muscle bound and always seemed to be carrying a hypodermic significantly larger than necessary for a human.
Thor slid a control crystal to a new position and accessed the data for Teal’c.
“The
“I can see that, Heimdall. Please let me continue undisrupted.”
Teal’c was more complex than most would assume. His admiration for Master Bra’tac was a constant thread intertwined with guilt over his actions as First Prime. Pride in himself was sparse compared with the all consuming pride he felt towards Rya’c.
The
Heimdall moved the control crystal and halted the display. “I do not understand how he can consider the Doctor a warrior, Thor. She is utilizing no armaments.”
“She does not often battle with offensive weapons. Her battles are fought against disease, infection and injury. The ability to keep them physically and mentally able to do battle is evidently critical to their success rate against the Goa’uld and the Replicators,” Thor hypothesized scrolling to the next member of SG-1.
Daniel Jackson’s sleeping mind was a jumble of several different languages including attempts at Ancient, trying to sort out ruins and hieroglyphics he had encountered both on Earth and off. Interspersed were strong, unrestrained emotions – positive and negative – concerning Sha’re and the Goa’uld plus his own ascension and subsequent reintegration with humanity.
Daniel’s mind skipped through a recount of his multitudes of injuries and mind melds. Thor double checked the emotional resonance concerning these occurrences since logic would dictate them to be extremely stressful. Instead, Doctor Jackson’s subconscious radiated a simple peace and absolute faith bordering on religious zeal in one person: Janet Fraiser.
Before Heimdall could comment, Thor turned his head, glanced at the scientist then resumed reading.
The male subconscious could be predictable. The image of Doctor Fraiser, surrounded by a soft pure white light, dressed in Air Force blues and a while lab coat morphed into a split second image of the good Doctor in nothing but the lab coat. There was momentary guilt associated with vision not so much for the image itself but for the perceived negative reaction of Major Carter.
“Interesting,” thought Thor. Another slide of the crystal and the final member of SG-1’s data slid onto his view panel: Major Samantha Carter.
Unlike her male counterparts, Carter’s thoughts of the Doc were anything but compartmentalized. They flowed through and around everything felt: her feelings for Cassandra amplified; her worry about her father muted; her sadness over her mother’s death calmed; her need to protect expanded, her desire… Thor hadn’t blushed in a millennium.
Even her apprehension about the possible discovery of their relationship was placated by their shared love. Janet’s unwavering support allowed Sam to risk everything for the greater good, knowing her soul was safe.
“You are sure there are no records of this anywhere, Heimdall? It is imperative that no one is able to access their dreams, especially Major Carter’s,” Thor asked. “And you are never to speak of what you have seen here, to anyone.”
“There are no records, Thor. When the power crystal is removed the volatile memory will cease to exist,” Heimdall needlessly explained. “Why are Major Carter’s desires for Doctor Fraiser a cause for concern?”
“The political structure of the military that controls the Stargate program does not allow such a pairing.”
“Two military personnel?”
“The bonding of two females, or two males for that matter,” Thor explained.
“I do not understand the prohibition,” Heimdall stated.
“Come, we can discuss this,” Thor deliberately removed the power crystal and the data streams disappeared from the viewers. “I am not sure I can explain their theory. I do not understand it myself.”
